Celebrating 45+ Years of World-Class Winemaking in Sonoma County
For more than four decades, Matanzas Creek Winery has been a trailblazer in California winemaking. Founded in 1977 by Sandra MacIver with visionary Merry Edwards as the first winemaker, the winery quickly gained acclaim for its signature Sauvignon Blancs, setting the bar for excellence. From establishing the Bennett Valley AVA to advancing clonal research and mentoring future winemakers, Matanzas Creek has left an indelible mark on the industry.
Today, Winemaker Marcia Torres Forno builds on this legacy with her exceptional craftsmanship and aromatics expertise. Inspired by her Chilean roots, she uses exacting techniques, from harvesting blocks at different moments to capture their aromatic peak to experimenting with varied fermentation vessels to best preserve those delicate aromas. This dedication results in wines of remarkable complexity and elegance, including not only Sauvignon Blancs and Merlots, but also limited quantities of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Chenin Blanc, Bordeaux-style red blends, and sparkling wine.

1977
Enterprising socialite Sandra MacIver establishes Matanzas Creek Winery—named for the local creek—with Merry Edwards as the founding winemaker. Sandra’s vision was to create world-class, terroir-driven wines.
1980
The first Matanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc is produced.
1984
Jackson Park Vineyard is planted to 90 acres of the Pétrus Merlot clone. Well-suited to the coastal influences of the Bennet Valley, this clone demonstrates how a Right Bank-style Merlot can be beautifully crafted from Sonoma County terroir.
1989
David Ramey becomes winemaker and establishes pedigree of outstanding 90+ point wines.
1996
Wine Spectator names Sandra MacIver one of the 20 most influential people in the modern wine industry.
2000
Jess Jackson & Barbara Banke purchase Matanzas Creek Winery with the aim of continuing the winery’s exceptional winemaking history.
2003
Bennett Valley is recognized as a distinctive growing region and the area was given AVA status, due in large part to Matanzas Creek’s individuality and quality of wine.
2011
Marcia Torres Forno is named Winemaker.
2017
All estate vineyards are sustainably farmed and are certified under the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.
